Prague, 11th September 2007 – On Saturday, the 22 September 2007 the Czech NGO People in Need (PIN) will organize a celebration with free entry at Střelecký ostrov to commemorate fifteen years of its existence. At two in the afternoon we will start our program with African games for both children and adults, a peace race around the island, photographical labyrinth, jokes about communism   and many other activities connected with PIN’s efforts in the Czech Republic and around the world. Both Simon Panek, the director of PIN and Jaromir Stetina a former war reporter and Czech Senator will hold an informal meeting at the venue. Journalists and the public are invited to attend.

The evening program will begin at 6 pm featuring a concert by Czech gypsy group Bengas, Prague world music fusion group Al Yaman and a performance by the Latino Cuban group Santy y su Marabu.

“The efforts of People in Need began in 1992 within the humanitarian and reporting team of Epicentrum and continued within the Czech newspaper Lidové noviny to become People in Need in 1994,” stated Šimon Pánek. PIN is a Czech organization that provides relief aid and development assistance, while working to defend human rights and democratic freedom.  At home, People in Need administers social integration programs in the Czech Republic and Slovakia and provides informative and educational activities. PIN is one of the largest organizations of its kind in post-communist Europe, and has administered projects in thirty-seven countries over the past fourteen years.

PIN today began in 1992 when dissidents and leaders of the Czechoslovak Velvet Revolution teamed with conflict journalists to form the Epicentrum Foundation, renamed People in Need and partnered with Czech Public Service Television 1994. From the start,, PIN has aimed to deliver relief aid and development assistance while raising the public’s level of awareness of the countries in which PIN works. Over fourteen years, PIN has developed many public awareness campaigns aimed at providing independent and unbiased information for journalists, opinion makers and the general public. Through campaigns, information projects and media supplements PIN believes it is possible to support an informed and empowered civil society both at home and abroad.

People in Need believes that cooperation is essential in order to meaningfully contribute to offering solutions to the world’s problems. PIN is an active partner in Alliance 2015, the Czech Forum for Development Cooperation (FoRS), the European Union Monitoring Center (EUMC), Eurostep and with Concord. PIN is also an implementing partner with ECHO, Europe Aid, UNHCR, UNICEF, WFP, IOM and many others, as well as being registered with USAID as an international private voluntary organization. PIN is a legally registered Czech non-profit, non-governmental organization with its seat at Safarikova 24, Prague 2, Czech Republic.
